The Idea

Two intentions stand for the idea of the duo performance in the foreground:

1. After musical cooperation of the artists in other projects lasting for years the idea was formulated newly activating the Duokonzept again.

2. Showing that new ways still fascinating even in the at present increasingly inflationary music world are open to be investigated by artist and listener, call these to this.

The Music

In the center of the concert program compositions of Mathias Sorof stand . for soprano, language, overtone song & Tapping Guitar/Chapman Stick, percussion and guitar standards are in addition interpreted from jazz, classical music and Irish Tunes.

The artists present their program and kidnap the audience with compositions, the impressions contain scenes from nature, landscape description, from the "master of the rings" and songs. Stylistically hardly to put in order, Sorofs compositions form a crossover from jazz, new music and world music. Both by composed works and compositions which offer room for the improvisation and rhythmical variation add to the lecture.

The Performance

In the duo Sorof has worked with the soprano and overtone singer Libena Karsch together for many years. The sympathetic harmony of Sorofs instruments and Libena Karschs voice giving the duo live performance unmistakable originality and fascination.

Libena Karsch uses her voice as an instrument. It therefore is part of the principle, that the voice varies with and without text. Used texts date predominantly from the lyric poetry of Libena Karsch which among other things writes them also into Esperanto. The sound of the language Esperanto matches the sound constellation soprano & Stick well. Libena Karsch proceeds so with The duo performance ace percussionist and guitarist.

Quotations:

"Funkily accented jazzpassages found as well place as meditatively distinctive sounds .... she sang approximately "Ci Flanko" was said ... with an alto part tinted more warmly artistically of the hope in the life, this here."
Langenhagener Landkreiszeitung, 1990

The multifaceted sounds of the Stick then were completed by its clear and warm soprano voice of the Jazzsängerin, Percussionistin and writer Libena Karsch...the enthusiastic audience was rewarded with boni."
Wolfenbütteler Schaufenster, 1991

The instruments

The soprano voice of Libena Karsch which style variably uses she forms the vocalistic main emphasis of the duo performance. She remains not arrested only in the typical soprano area but finds out various new possibilities of the sound design with her voice. By the practice of the overtone song it is possible for her to sing two or even three coherently at the same time. Subsequently she forms in addition another sound area of a the duo with percussion and guitar.

Chapman Stick and Tapping Guitar form the instrumental main emphasis of the duo performance.

The origins of the Tappings on the guitar can be traced back until the year 1952, the idea immediately arose after the invention of the electrical guitar.

The tuning and the way of playing are relatively new and require something change. It takes the polyphonic independence of the piano playing to the strings of a guitar instrument. The piano similar versatility arises of the special way of playing, the strings will be no more picked , they will be hammered with the fingers on the frets of the stick to produce a tone. A pickup provides the tone-creation and ampilification of the string vibrations. So it will possibly to play melodies, chord-progressions and rhythms independently with a left and right hand. Mathias Sorof creates with the Stick a new Sound, which demonstrates the liberty of a left and right hand in rhythmical, contrapuntal, simultaneous sequences.
